Falls Church is an independent city 6 miles from the nation's capital. This proximity has been a major influence on its development, especially over the last century. Falls Church City is small in area (2.2 square miles) and population (12,300), but its heritage dates back to the late 1600's when it was an early colonial settlement.
Falls Church was incorporated as a town in 1875 and as an independent City in 1948, led by parents determined to improve the quality of local schools. Today the city operates under the Council-Manager form of government expressed within the provisions of the City Charter adopted by the Virginia General Assembly in 1950.
The City of Falls Church, also known as "The Little City," is a unique and historic city with a variety of restaurants and shops that reflect the City's great ethnic and cultural diversity. The City is also known for its vibrant small-town atmosphere, walkable neighborhoods, historic building and sites, attractive streetscapes, and cultural attractions. While visiting the City of Falls Church, be sure to stop by the Eden Center, a Vietnamese regional shopping center for authentic Vietnamese dishes and specialties. The City of Falls Church also offers the opportunity to take a glimpse into the past with self-guided walking tours to historical attractions such as Cherry Hill Farmhouse and Tinner Hill. Among the many activities available, visitors can also enjoy the beautiful murals that adorn the city, visit the award winning farmer’s market, or attend special events throughout the year.
